Hoops 4 Health Challenge 2006 – Two Day Journal Day 1 The Hoops 4 Health All Stars (H4H) arrived in Darwin ready to spread the good health message to the community and play in the Hoops 4 Health Challenge against the Darwin Representative Team. The two day event kicked off with a launch at Karama Primary School outlining what will be happening over the two days. Trendy Trev had the school in a frenzy and students were able to ask questions to members of the H4H All – Stars. Anthony “the Man' Mundine was then swamped by students and the media. Karama School then provided lunch which was a banquet of local seafood including barra, mud crabs and marinated buffalo. Noel Long and Leon Barlow did a fantastic job in making this event a success. Choc and Trendy and other members of the H4H All- Stars sat down with students, teachers and members of the NT under 16 Girls Basketball Team. Following this was a motivational talk to some youth of Mission Australia and the H4H All Stars had their first team Shootaround. Choc and Timmy D led the teams in the shooting games, although there were protests from the other teams in regards to the way scores were kept. In the evening of day one, the H4H All Stars attended a sponsor's dinner which focussed on where to now for the H4H program and introducing the H4H All-Stars to the organisations who helped make the event possible. A big thankyou to the NT AIDS and Hepatitis Council staff and Robert Williams for putting on the dinner. Day 2 The H4H All-Stars paid a visit out to the Darwin Prison, talks were led by Anthony Mundine and Trendy Trev. Trendy's emphasis was on the fact that not all people are perfect and to keep your head up. It was then off to Driver High School for a quick visit and talk to their assembly. Mundine once again encouraged students to have a dream and live a healthy lifestyle without drugs and alcohol. One of the highlights of the two days was the Royal Darwin Hospital stopover. Choc and Aaron Grabau (Bobo) of the Cairns Taipans stopped and visited with every single child in the children's ward. It was an emotional visit for all involved with satisfaction gained from both the H4H All – Stars and the children. We then stopped at a young person's house with a disability and both Mundine and Grabau made his day. A busy morning indeed, now time to focus on the H4H Challenge. The H4H All Stars had a Shootaround in Marrara Indoor Stadium. DJ Fat Albert was warming up with his beats too. The stage is set, the time has come, now it was the big test, could the H4H All-Stars prove their All Star status and compete in the H4H Challenge? The H4H Challenge Tip-off and Darwin take the early advantage with some early baskets to Koorda Roe and Travis Ellis. Playing in front of an 800 + crowd, Aaron Grabau, Kurt Russell and Paul Vandenbergh showed their years of experience and slowly pulled the ascendency to the H4H team. Joel Khalu nailed some big three point bombs in transition and Mundine connected on several penetrating pull up jump shots mid range. Coming off the bench, Australian Opals representative, Rohanee Cox provided a spark and found herself at the free throw line on numerous occasions. In the second half Lindsay “Magic” Munro and Manny Munungurr lit up the offense with some spectacular play. Paul Vandenbergh and Kurt Russell constantly set up team-mates with precision passing while Mundine continued to rack up points and steals. Cairns Taipans games record holder, Aaron Grabau had the crowd pumping with a spectacular tip in dunk over three Darwin players. Lucas Tanis of the Darwin team played well all night and was a handful for the H4H All Stars in the post. Matthew Hunt nailed some open jump shots for Darwin in the third and fourth quarters to keep the game close. Final Score in the First Annual H4H Challenge. H4H 124, Darwin 108. The MVP award was shared between three players, Lucas Tans, Anthony Mundine and Aaron Grabau. Mundine finished with 17 points, Grabau finished with 26 and Tanis was unstoppable in the paint for Darwin . Manny Munungurr from Gapuwiyak in North East Arnhem Land excelled under the pressure and finished with 10 points off the bench. The Hoops 4 Health Challenge Game was the culmination of two days of health promotion and health education. The H4H program will now have a focus on Hepatitis C while also encouraging physical activity and educating and empowering young people to make informed choices with regards to substances that can harm ones body. The Hoops 4 Health Program targeted young people and adults alike over the two days with the aim of prevention of chronic diseases caused by alcohol and tobacco particularly for Indigenous people. When you consider the costs in buying a dialysis machine and the costs of education, the later far outweighs the costs of purchasing equipment. So Hoops 4 Health theory of prevention is better than cure is actually cheaper too. Final Score line: Hoops 4 Health 124 Aaron Grabau 26 Paul Vandenbergh 17 Anthony Mundine 16 Kurt Russell 16 Timmy Duggan 15 Joel Khalu 13 Manny Munungurr 10 Rohanee Cox 7 Lindsay Munro 4 Darwin Rep Team 108 Lucas Tanis 25 Matt Rugendyke 19 Travis Ellis 16 Daniel Miller 11 Matt Hunt 10 Lucas Eugster 8 Glenn Warrior 7 Kevin Roe 5 Jacob Fogolyan 5
